Feature request: improvements for HiDPI screens

Post by roppp »

Thank you very much for providing your reliable backup software for free!
It works great for me, but I have some usability and cosmetic issues "caused" by my HiDPI monitor (4k pixels with 182 dpi density, using Windows 10 with desktop scaling set to 200%). Most of the Veeam agent windows scale correctly, however some screens might be modified, e.g.

Volume selection: the check marks besides each volume are hardly visible:

All the columns have too small width, which is also not remembered so the user has to adjust the width each time to read the contents:

The window of the backup browser is always started with small size, so the user has to enlarge the window each time and resize the columns. Also the window icon looks strange:

(This problem can be workaround by clicking on "Open in Explorer"...)

Additionally cosmetical: the tray icon and some other UI graphics are blurry, so they might be provided in higher resolution

[MERGED] Problems on Server 2016 with high DPI

Post by ender »

The Create Recovery Media window is too small on Server 2016 when using high DPI, and some controls aren't visible:

Edit Backup Job window has a similar problem:

This problem seems to only affect Server 2016 - on 2012 R2 and 2019 the window looks fine. I'm not sure if this happens because I'm connected to the server through RDP.

ender,

Unfortunately that's a known issue - whenever you open any agent wizard with non 100% DPI controls might get blurry or canvas might be resized like in you case. I'd recommend changing DPI to 100 or 150% as that should make wizard fully operational. We plan to fix this behavior and make agent controls DPI independent, but since this is a very complex task I cant provide any ETA now.

Note that this problem seems to be specific to Server 2016 (1607, OS build 14393.3564) - on other versions (I checked Servers 2019 [1809] and 2012 R2, and Windows 10 1909) the window is sized properly, and all controls are visible.

Seven years, still the same problem. For the engineers, the first 4K monitor was my IBMin 2001, twenty-four years ago. The first (that I can find) desktop HiDPI monitor was 2012, thirteen years ago, with the iMac. Today HiDPI monitors are ubiquitous.

For the bean counters: requisition HiDPI monitors for the devs, so they can fix this.

Devs: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... on-windows

This has been available since Windows 8.1 (circa 2013, twelve years ago). There is literally no excuse for a failure to support HiDPI displays. Notepad.exe, WinSCP.exe and VLC.exe all support HiDPI. Why is the Veeam Backup and Replication application stuck in the pre-2010 era?

Because it uses pre-2010 era UI technology without high DPI support (Windows Forms).

In VBR V13, the UI was migrated to WPF though, which does support high DPI. So if you manages VAW with VBR, you should be good. However, I don't know if standalone VAW V13 UI was migrated to WPF too.

It hasn’t been migrated yet, but now the path is clear, and Veeam Agent for Windows can follow its elder brother. Thank you!
