We are in the process of migrating to a Dell PowerStore and was hoping to use NVMe over TCP for the storage snapshot-based backups. We were shocked to find that it wasn't supported yet with Veeam and wondering what options we have now since just migrating into the PowerStore. We have always used iSCSI in the past with our old HPE Solution.
I submitted a case to support and they responded with the following:
Veeam Backup & Replication does not currently support storage snapshot integration for NVMe over TCP with Dell PowerStore. Storage integration is only supported for iSCSI and Fibre Channel protocols. NVMe-oF (including NVMe over TCP) is not supported for storage snapshot-based backups or restores. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
To use Veeam storage snapshot integration with Dell PowerStore, you must present your datastores to ESXi hosts and Veeam proxies using either iSCSI or Fibre Channel. If your environment is using NVMe over TCP, storage snapshot integration will not function, and you will encounter errors related to LUNs and proxies during snapshot operations.
If you require storage snapshot-based backups, you will need to reconfigure your storage so that datastores are presented via iSCSI or Fibre Channel. Alternatively, you can use standard Veeam backup methods such as HotAdd or NBD, which do not require storage integration and will work with NVMe over TCP datastores, but will not leverage storage snapshots.
The Dell PowerStore Plugin for Veeam only supports iSCSI and Fibre Channel. No additional plugin or configuration will enable NVMe over TCP support for storage integration at this time.
Any information on roadmap when NVMe over TCP will be added as an option?
thanks for your question. To provide a answer please allow me to make what hypervisor you use with your Dell Powerstore. As you posted in the sub-forum of specific ones I want to ensure our answer here will be right.
yes if we talk about VMware then the Storage Integrations apply.
As for Powerstore and NVMe-oF, it is correct that the current Plugin does not support it.
While the Veeam USAPI framework it is built on top of supports NVMe-oF, this Plugin was not yet updated to support it.
I will take your request to the next PM meeting with Dell as they would need to enhance their Plugin for the support.
It would be great if you could provide me with some details about your company in a private message, that would make it easier to discuss with Dell.
Hi Ryan, could you please elaborate on what specifically doesn't work for you? As mentioned above, the current version of the Dell PowerStore plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication doesn't support NVMe-oF connectivity. However, storage integration using proxies connecting over other supported protocols should work. Thanks.
This is something that really frustrates me! Our Dell rep as well as Veeam expressed the NVME-OF would work in our new arrays. Only after the purchase and install did we find out from Veeam/Dell "just kidding!" with support for nvme-of
Hi Adam, understand your frustration and hope it was just a misunderstanding and no one intended to mislead you. NVMe-oF support is there on the VBR side and is available via USAPI. But vendors need to support it in the plug-in on their side. So far, we have no ETA from Dell on when they gonna include this, but we'll definitely get back when we know something.
