Is there any way to use vmware workstation as the target host for a virtual lab?

Thanks.

Does it even support NFS storage?

VMware workstation supports what the underlying Windows OS shows it, but everything is in terms of NTFS filesystems mounted as driver letters...
So my doubt too is the vPower NFS created by Veeam cannot be mounted in VMware Workstation. I'm also curious what is the use case for VMware Workstation for surebackup...

The use case is to not load down the vmware infrastructure with virtual labs when they would run just as well on a network admin's workstation with vmware workstation.

But in this way it's hard to automate via scheduled surebackup jobs unless you rely on leaving all the workstation powered on and connected on the same network as Veeam. IMHO, to unload the production server is better to create a spare ESXi host using a whitebox machine and dedicate it to surebackup.

Can an unlicensed ESXi server be the SureBackup host? It can't be anything else Veeam related . . .

Yes, SureBackup jobs can use free ESX(i) hosts, see this topic for more info.

Vitaliy -- I should have been more clear. I want to know if it is supposed to work -- if it's within VMware's licensing expectation (regardless of whether or not the restrictions exist).

From the other thread, my assumption is that it is NOT supposed to work, as it does use snapshots, which appears to be the particular piece that VMware disallowed in the free version. Said restriction appears to have been overlooked, but is expected to be reintroduced sometime soon.

Your assumption is correct.
