Backuping VM where Veeam is installed - full backup every t.

Post by GrZeCh »

Hello,

is this normal that when I'm making backup (using job) of VM where Veeam all components are installed Veeam is making full backup every time? Other Windows VMs backup is incremental but not this VM. Can this be related to having non Windows VMs inside the same backup job? In storage settings ot this job I have Incremental backup selected with having sythetic full every weekend adn transforming previous full backup chains into rollbacks.

Regards

Hello,

Could you please tell me what made you think that it is running full backup every time? Do you see multiple VBK files created on the backup repository?

Thanks!

You are right. vbk is only one but there is simething different during this backup. Other Windows VM systems when they are being processed their Hard Disk entries during backup shows that only some part of whole HD size was copied. During processing VM where Veeam is installed every time I see whole HD being copied.

Entries from report:

VM where Veeam is installed:

VeeamVM Success 23:35:57 02:14:06 (+1) 155,0 GB 147,0 GB 13,1 GB 2:38:08
VeeamVM Success 22:06:34 22:53:33 155,0 GB 147,0 GB 27,2 GB 0:46:59
VeeamVM Success 22:04:37 22:38:36 155,0 GB 147,0 GB 11,6 GB 0:33:58

other VM:

OtherVM Success 03:35:21 04:38:21 570,0 GB 54,6 GB 13,4 GB 1:03:00
OtherVM Success 04:39:42 05:58:18 570,0 GB 62,1 GB 17,8 GB 1:18:35
OtherVM Success 01:01:13 02:02:21 570,0 GB 68,0 GB 19,2 GB 1:01:07

as you can see first VM where Veeam is installed HD was read completely every time while second VM was read only 54,62 and 68GB of 570GB.

Do you see a [CBT] label in the job session next to virtual disks of this VM?

Nope.

EDIT: Nope for this one VM with Veeam software installed. Other Windows VMs have [CBT] next to HD.

That's the reason. Does this VM have any snapshots? CBT could sometimes not work for VMs that have one or more snapshots before backup starts (VMware limitation).

Btw, what version of Veeam B&R are you running?

There are no shapshots listed in vSphere Client for this VM. I'm using latest version (6.1.0.181 64bit).

Another reason for CBT not working could be an unsupported virtual hardware version.

Guest OS Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit. Latest VMware tools installed. There are no USB, audio hardware. Disk controller is Paravirtual (just like on my other Windows VMs).

Does having swap file located on local storage (since I own Essentials license I don't use VMotion) and VM running on shared storage could have something to do with CBT not working?

Starting with 6.0 patch 3 CBT is disabled for any system performing as a Hotadd proxy, unless the behavior has changed in 6.1 (I'm not aware that it has). That would include the Veeam server since it is by default a proxy. See "Issue 17" in this thread.

Ah. Ok. No further questions.

Just small information to Veeam team. SMTP server which is sending forum notifications is on Barracuda blacklist:
