Tape drive/library not recognized
Hi,
Upgraded from Veeam B&R 6.5 to V7 on Physical Windows 2008R2 server with an SCSI MSL 6030 Tape Library Attached.
I don't see the tape under "backup infrastructure".
Under the device manager i have 2 devices.
- Tape drives = Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-4 Drive (driver provider = Symantec Corporation).
- Medium Changer Devices = HP StorageWorks MSL6000 Series Medium Changers (Driver provider = Hewlett Packard Company)
Symantec Backup Exec is also installed on this server (we use that now for backup to tape).
Why can't see Veeam the tape device?
Or is it Backup exec that is locking something.
Regards,
Tristan

Re: MSL 6030 not recognized
Hi, Tristan.
Yep, one of the first troubleshooting steps regarding tape functionality should include checking the presence of other tape software that access corresponding tape appliance. The other includes double-checking the drive presence in Windows device manager and the availability vendor-provided Windows drivers.
Also, as far as I know, Anton has been working on a short of FAQ post regarding tape installation and troubleshooting and this post is likely to be published soon; so, stay tuned.
Thanks.

Re: MSL 6030 not recognized
ok thanks.
I hope that there will be some nice tutorials for the tape backups.. For different scenarios (GFS etc).
I can move backup exec to the trash

Have you already checked the Veeam B&R user guide? It has pretty detailed description of the tape functionality including deployment and basic scenarios.

Re: MSL 6030 not recognized
HP MSL 6030 Is a working device.
but it was needed to change the driver of the tape device:
from
- Tape drive = Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-4 Drive (driver provider = Symantec Corporation)
to
- Tape drive = Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-4 Drive (driver provider = Hewlett Packard)
Otherwise access was locked, and veeam wasn't able to backup to the tapes.

Re: MSL 6030 not recognized
Depending on what do you consider to be a basic scenario. Creating jobs, linking them to backup jobs, restoring from tapes, working with tapes, etc. - all these things are there.tfloor wrote:I've read that user guide, but i don't see the basic scenarios. or it's me that expect too much
Btw, thanks for the feedback regarding the drivers, much appreciated.

[MERGED] : Missing "Tape" in B&R V7
Hallo,
after upgrading B&R V6.5 to V7 there is no Tape Drive in GUI. Server is Fujitsu TX200, Windows Server 2008, Adaptec SAS Controller, HP LTO5 Ultrium Tape Drive. There is also Symantec BE2010 installed. With Backup Exec there is no problem, program found tape drive and works. What should I do ? Uninstalling all other Software and previous Versions of B&R ??

Hi, Stefan. Yep, it’s recommended practice, indeed, to uninstall all other tape backup solution prior to using VB&R 7.0. Thanks.

Re: Tape drive/library not recognized
Hi, Christian. I’m wondering whether appliance in question is even shown in the Windows Device Manager. Also, kindly check whether you have any other tape backup solution installed on this server. Thanks.

Re: Tape drive/library not recognized
Stopping backup exec jobs helped im my case. Tape job is working with a HP MSL G3 2024 Library.

Re: Tape drive/library not recognized
Hi Guys
I had a similar issue with my HP G2 Autoloader on a Physical Backup server which did have Backup Exec 2012 already installed. Finally sorted it by updating Tape Drive Firmware and Device Drivers. My full article is here http://www.talking-it.com/2013/backup/v ... pe-device/
Thanks
Nick
