Tape device recommendations

Post by PavanAyyagari »

Hello All,
We are currently backing up our VMware cluster (30 vms) to a Veeam physical server. The repository used here is the local disk as well as a Synology NAS ( SOBR setup).
The archive for Production servers are copied to a tape device which is IBM ULTRIUM 5 HH 3580 TAPE DRIVE.
We are planning to re-do our backup infrastructure and want to check if I can get some recommendations on replacing the physical server as well as the tape device. Seems the existing tape device can only support like 8 cartridges due to its limitations and looking for a new one.
The proposal I have done is to do the backups locally on to the new Veeam server and move the archives to the tape as a backup copy job to the secondary destination.
Any help on this greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

Backing up to internal disks inside the physical backup server would be my preferred design. Two reasons: simplicity and performance. I would take a server from one of the major brands, because they usually work better than no-name products.

For tape devices, I hear mostly from HPE and IBM. Both work fine and if you need "inspiration", I suggest having a look at tape-f29/unofficial-tape-library-compat ... 17488.html

Best regards,
hannes
