Backup of large Shares (200TB)
Hey,
So I have a Share in my environment, that is around 80TB atm and is expected to grow up to 200TB+ in the next year.
This Share is a Windows Server attached to our SAN, my BackupServer (DL380 G9) is also connected to this SAN and has a D6020 attached directly via SAS.
Now I need to backup this 80TB to my BackupServer (and copy the backup to a remote location via WAN).
As vhdx "only" supports up to 64TB and we want to have one big storage instead of many 64TB storages, we cannot virtualize that environment.
My approach right now would be, to install the VAW on the backup Server, and then backup the data with this.
I don't know about the performance of this setup, as I haven't tried it yet.
Does Veeam have any other approach for that amount of data?
Or is it not "supported" by Veeam? (as Veeam is focusing on VM).
If not, would you recommend to use the VAW or should I use another Backup Solution?
E: just saw that it has nothing to do with HyperV, maybe move it to B&R or VAW

Hi jochot,
Moved your post to VAW subforum.

Is this storage presented to your Windows OS as a single volume? Thanks.that is around 80TB atm and is expected to grow up to 200TB+ in the next year.

Hey Dima,
thanks for moving
Yes, this storage is a single volume which I can access via SAN from the Backupserver.

Re: Backup of large Shares (200TB)
So this is a single volume - yes.
I tried to backup, I get to an error and then I saw that apparently Windows VSS is supporting a maximum of 64TB: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/hel ... in-windows
is there any Veeam approach to backup that kind of data?
Or what would be the workaround?
I can't believe I am the only one having that amount of data

Create smaller volumes. This is a Windows limitation not a Veeam limitation.

Re: Backup of large Shares (200TB)
So for all of you that found themselfes in the same spot, here is how we plan to do it: https://imgur.com/a/W7ICE
We have 22TB Logical disks from our DataCore Storage, then we use 20TB VHDX's per logical disk (10% for snapshots).
We have one Server as a ShareServer which uses all the 20tbVHDX's in RAID0 to provide one large share to the user.
We have one Server which is a Hyper-V host and manages the VHDX's (basically it starts the Snapshot and restores the data if needed)
We have one Server which acts as the Veeam Backup Proxy and copies the Data to the Repository via SAN.
Tell me what you think about this setup, we went for 20TB drives as it probably takes long enough to restore the data at 20TB size, and we have more than one query on the DataCore storage.

Do you really intend to use RAID 0? Sure, you get disk striping and speed but you don't get any parity.jochot wrote: We have one Server as a ShareServer which uses all the 20tbVHDX's in RAID0 to provide one large share to the user.

Re: Backup of large Shares (200TB)
Well datacore is in raid1 and is completely replicated (2x HP D6020 and 2x DL380), the raid0 is only to provide one share to the users, not for data security

Re: Backup of large Shares (200TB)
As far as I can see DataCore has it's own hardware VSS provider. If that's true, please check with support team - we might have a registry key to enable the hardware VSS provider instead of native Microsoft VSS.jochot wrote:is there any Veeam approach to backup that kind of data?

Jochot,
As Dima said,
Please contact support to check for this registry key and don't forget to post the support case ID here and the follow-up after talking to our engineers.
Thanks
Mike

Re: Backup of large Shares (200TB)
And how is the backup working?
I have a simillar challenge where we have 4x15TB disks from HyperV and need to protect them.

Re: Backup of large Shares (200TB)
well 15TB disks aren't a problem at all as it is below the 64TB mark.
