Bootable Media: BluRay w/ Image

Post by Hariseldon1 »

Has anyone tried create bootable media (specifically: bluray) that can be booted from (directly) and also contain the very large backup files to perform storation?

I am making a "restore" disc for a family member's laptop that I freshly installed Windows.

The "backup to another location" veeam backup filesize is 22 GB

hopefully BD-R XL 100GB 'm disc' media supports very large file sizes :-D

I have a couple of blank BD-R XL discs to test, I conceed I might make a few $10 coasters the first time I do this... hopefully your advice can reduce the number of expensive coasters I create *wink* ;-)

facinating.... fresh install backup size = 6 GB, with browsers installed + fully compliant with all Microsoft updates the backup size ballooned to over 20 TB sheeh!
(yes before taking an image I did a "disk clean up" w/ every possible additional setting)
=======
My fall back option is use veeam media creation tool to create a USB bootable drive to combine with the bluray that I will write the veeam backup files to.
althought I would prefer to give my family member the bootable bluray disc by itself (one less thing for them to manage)

Thank you in advance to everyone who responds helping me with my question!

Hello Hari,

Blueray is supported as a target for the recovery media. However from the ease of use perspective I'd recommend using a USB media: you can create one partition for RE and use all unallocated disk space to store the need backup. Thank you!

I do not disagree with ease of use

the ease of use also means ease of misplacement

whats more murphys law.... flash media is also easily suceptible to electro-magnificient-gremlins (if they are fed after midnight)

Lastly.... does anybody know the voltage decline rate for flash media not used over time?
me neither

So I will double up: flash + optical
=====
can anyone speak to my initial inquiry as to how to include the recovery job data + make the media bootable?

I have five (5) ten dollar discs to experiment

Thought I would ask before burning cash :-D

Hari,

Unfortunately don't have a Blu-Ray burner, but will check with out QA team. Generally, I'd create the ISO using Veeam Recovery Media wizard and land the entire backup file (whole folder create by backup job) inside the ISO in a newly created dedicated folder. Then once you boot the RE, it should be possible to select such backup by browsing the local path.

I failed my first $10 disc... the failure error has a curious explaination: "Burning ISO image to media error: the write failed because the drive returned error information that could not be recovered from"

I am keeping an open mind :-)
(from the error description I am assuming the error was not the fault of veeam software)

Can anybody help me with suggestions about troubleshooting this?

I found this other post (albeit with a different error "text")
veeam-agent-for-windows-f33/failed-to-c ... 31744.html

I am running Win10 with default "security" settings (for antivirus)... I disabled all the settings micro$oft gives me (to mimic 'disabling antivirus kaspersky' like this other post)

I have five (5) more $10 discs to experiment with

I will wait a few hours (maybe until tomorrow) to see if anybody replies with other suggestions.

Thanks!!

The burning completed successfully!
The verification failed... "Failed to create revocery media: the DVD structure is not present. this may be cayuses by incompatible drive/medium used"

But I not using DVD... I am using bluray.

The bluray does boot.

But the bluray boots into a blue "Recovery" screen:

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.
Error code: 0xc00000bb
You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.

So the Veeam Recovery Media 6.1.2 tool can burn the bootable ISO media
The veeam recovery media 6.12 tool cannot create a bootable media and add the job data in the media???

Update... I tried creating the Veeam Recovery Media 6.1.2 bootable ISO image

Then I opened the ISO file in UltraISO v9.7.6.3860 and added the directory with the Veeam backup Job data.

Then I saved the ISO file.

Then I burned the ISO file to disc #3 (attempt #1 of #3)

The physical Optical Disc #3 is not bootable

The digital iso file IS bootable (when I present this to a VM)

I also tried burning the straight up plain IOS file created by the Veeam Recovery Media 6.1.2 recovery media creation tool

I burned the 693 MB ISO file to a DVD... this physical DVD boots properly to Veeam Recovery Media 6.1.2.

So i can confirm the ISO greated by the 6.1.2 recovery media creation tool is indeed good and will boot!

I only need to find a way to include the Recovery Job files into the ISO (created by 6.1.2 recovery media creation tool) without breaking the boot-ability of the ISO file (w/ Job data) when burned to physical optical media.

I had hoped I could simply specify the job folder in the 6.1.2 recovery media creation tool's option to include storage.
--> Sadly, physical media burned in this manner (burned directly from the 6.1.2 recovery media creation tool) fails the verification process and subsequently fails to be bootable
--> Sadly, ISO images generated in this manner boot into a blue "Recovery" screeen "your PC/Device needs to be repaired, there isn't enough memory available to create a ramdisk device. Error Code 0xc0000017

Hello Hari,

You can submit a support case and our team help you investigating why the blue ray media does not boot. If you do it - please share the support case. Thank you!
