Exchange No Log Truncation

Post by Zew »

I'll try to keep it simple while providing as much details as possible.

1) No I have not created a support request yet. (an if really needed)

2) I noticed my exchange server size becoming a bit problematic on my monitoring server, since extending the Disk causes a re-calculation to occur and can slow down a Backup job considerably, It also doesn't fix the root problem. Well what is the root problem, storage space usage (not Mailbox based), so what is it from... Logs. (Clearing out my logs on my exchange server cleared up over 60Gigs).

3) doing some research on Exchange log truncation many source mention that after a Backup, The logs should be truncated. OK so let's double check... What are the Steps required.. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4 Link to Doc

4) Yup, my Job has all those settings applied, and all job settings are correct and Credentials work as expected via RPC (no VIX required). Ok... so what's the problem?

5) Check existing Form posts...microsoft-hyper-v-f25/no-exchange-logs- ... 63113.html, dead end and, veeam-backup-replication-f2/when-will-e ... 56922.html Dead End, I'm seeing a theme here.... and this one for 9.5 vmware-vsphere-f24/since-b-r-9-5-the-ex ... 39212.html but that leads to this KB that is rather useless https://www.veeam.com/kb2191

6) Check KBs with same issues, already mentioned one above that did not help as the SQL tab already has truncation enabled), and this nice Step by Step one https://www.veeam.com/kb1878

So I followed it, and saw the helper log file on my exchange server and found no errors:

"If the command is being sent, you should see the following in the log file:
INFO Processing external FinishSnapshot command.
Notifying writers about the 'BACKUP FINISH' event.
Truncate logs: [true]."

Yup I do see those.... so why are my logs not truncating?

I checked the EventViewer and saw no indications of any issues around VSS or otherwise? IS there specific Event IDs to lok out for? Shadow Volumes setting it's self doesnt' need to be enabled on the drive for this work, eh? I can't see any mentions of it in the referenced Veeam Doc.

Please help.

Hello!

I think you should contact our support team to investigate the issue, apparently logs analysis is required.
You may also perform manual shadow creation in full mode to check if the same issue persists and look for VSS errors in the Application event log.

In some cases vsstrace tool might be useful for troubleshooting but I recommend to ask our support team to check if it's required in your particular case and to help you with command syntax.
Please share support case ID for our reference.

Thanks!

Been a bit, figured I'd come back as I believe this may have been a, my own ignorance, issue.

Reading this: https://www.alitajran.com/cleanup-logs- ... 2016-2019/ I believe I need to clear the logs on the file system it's self not the DB.

I had actually written an interactive powershell script to handle this here https://github.com/Zewwy/Clear-Exchange ... geLogs.ps1 while ago.

I can adjust my script to be non-interactive then I assume I can add it as a trigged script within Veeam, eh? or just time it accordingly with Task Scheduler?

Hello,

I believe it's a matter of preference, you may take a look at backup job script settings if you want to schedule script execution in accordance with backup job schedule.

Thanks!

Thank Petr, figured as much it was preference. Will try the Veeam way and report my findings. :)
