Veeam Encryption

Post by pangal1 »

Hello,

We have enabled encryption at the backup job end. The backup goes to repository.
We have another backup job to tape where it copies data from repository to tape . I wanted to know whether data is encrypted both at disk and tape?? and if i wish to restore backup in another veeam server from tape whether i would need encryption credentials

I would say no, because veeam will not copy encrypted blocks to tape, if the tape job has encryption disabled.
You need to make sure, that encryption is enabled on the tape media pools too.

Hi Sachin,
I wanted to know whether data is encrypted both at disk and tape??
It depends. Do you have encryption enabled for your Backup Copy Job?

If tape jobs are writing already encrypted data to tape (for example, Veeam data from backup jobs that already have encryption enabled), you may find it acceptable to not use tape-level encryption. However, be aware that a user who gets access to the tape will be able to restore the backup files. Although this user will not be able to access the contents of those files, some valuable information (e.g. job names used for backup files) may leak.
and if i wish to restore backup in another veeam server from tape whether i would need encryption credentials
That is correct.
You will have to import a backup file and define a password to decrypt the backup file.

I'd also recommend getting acquainted with Encryption Best Practices in the User guide and Backup and Backup Copy Job Encryption in the Best Practices guide.
