Linux proxy vs Windows?
Due to licensing cost, my home lab had the 2 W2019 servers acting as proxies. I decided to spin up 3 linux proxies based, and tried out hotadd. Is it my imagination, or does linux hotplug/unplug more quickly than windows? Just curious (maybe it's subjective...)

Re: Linux proxy vs Windows?
Hello,
Best regards,
Hannes
I would go for this one I mean, we don't know whether there was some special configuration on your Windows 2019 machines. But overall, HotAdd process is something that happens on the VMware side. So the difference should not be related to the operating system of the proxymaybe it's subjective
Best regards,
Hannes

Agree, I think hot add slowness is mostly caused by vSphere, not the OS itself. Remember, when you plug in USB drive to your Windows machine, the reaction is instant right? There's no long wait or anything.
As for sheer proxy throughput, it is more or less the same too. It can be slightly better or worse depending on Linux distro, but small differences overall (we did a lot of comparative performance testing).

Eh, probably just one of those subjective things

I can't tell you if it's faster or slower, but it's 'fast enough for free'

Can tell you that as opposed to the configuration we were using (production servers doubling as Proxy because of licence costs and multihomed to separate production traffic from backup traffic on the LAN) dedicated linux servers are simple, fast and cheap. I LOVE the Penguin! There is now a brilliant guide to creating a Linux based immutable backup appliance (see veeam-backup-replication-f2/build-an-im ... 79074.html) Big Thanks to Veeam for integrating Linux and Linux proxies into Veaam. Way to go Everyone!

Re: Linux proxy vs Windows?
Very grateful as well. I have 2 ws2019 servers as DC (radius+dhcp+dns+AD), and having them have to act as proxies was annoying. I removed them from proxy role, and very happy at that...

uhm yes... a domain controller should never run any Veeam rolesDC (radius+dhcp+dns+AD), and having them have to act as proxies was annoying.

Re: Linux proxy vs Windows?
Well, at the time, given the cost of windows licenses for a home lab, I didn't see an alternative Hence, my gratitude at having 'the penguin' step into the role
