Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
I'm with Lagcat, and the Why is that backups to disk take longer that storage snapshots from the VMs perspective. The longer that a snapshot is associated with the VM, the longer that it takes to consolidate which can cause issues on storage sensitive VMs.

We would also highly appreciate NDMP support for Veeam. Specifically, backing up the CIFS via NDMP directly.

We don't need NDMP/Tape, but Netapp CIFS support (indexing of Snapshots for single file restore) would be wonderful!

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
Add another prospect to the list for this feature. I think a nice 9.1 patch with this feature sounds greatjveerd1 wrote:Since the Veeam NetApp partnership, Veeam B&R v8 integrates very well with NetApp as production storage using storage snapshots. Because we often use NetApp as a backup repository we would like to file a NDMP tape support feature request. A very common configuration is connecting a tape library via Fibre Channel or SCSI to the NetApp to perform NDMP tape backup.

It has not been planned for version 9. Also, amount of work required makes it a feature of product release, not of product update. Thanks.

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
I too would like to see that feature added.
We have a NETAPP with our VMs on it backed up with VEEAM 8.
But we also want to be able to backup our CIFS filer Share with VEEAM ideally with Snapshot.
We have looked at File Copy but its So SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW....
If this is interest to you don't forget to comment so VEEAM can get a clear picture if there is interest in adding this feature or not...

Any update regarding this feature request for Veeam 9.5? In particular our Enterprise customers are requesting this feature.

Nothing changes in 9.5 for this matter. Nevertheless, we are aware of the demand for this particular functionality, so it's not like we're turning a blind eye to it. Thanks.

In the meantime, one thing about v9.5 is that tape operations (especially files to tape jobs) have seen significant performance improvements so that should help alleviate things in the short term.

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
We just upgraded to v9.5. However, file to tape seems only suppported for Windows or Linux sources. Is it poassible to backup CIFS-Shares to Tape? We don´t have a Library attached to Veeam Backup Server, so I can´t test it and the previous posts are not absolutely clear about this.
We´d appreciate NDMP Support very much, to backup our CIFS-Volumes directly to tape via NDMP .

Yes. You can specify the path in the file to tape > add files window or add cifs server to VBR and then pick the server from the list.Is it poassible to backup CIFS-Shares to Tape?
Thanks. We are tracking this request. We´d appreciate NDMP Support very much, to backup our CIFS-Volumes directly to tape via NDMP .

[MERGED] Backup NetApp CIFS vfiler
Hi,
someone has information when it will be possible with Veeam to make a backup of NetApp CIFS vfilern? I know many that do not use a classic file server but netapp CIFS and which the feature urgently need. Has anyone a workaround how one could implement with the current version?
Thanks

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
Hi, Robert, and welcome to our forums,
As mentioned above, you can use files to tape jobs to archive to tapes files residing on those shares.
Native support has been already tracked as feature request for one of the next product versions.
Thanks.

Massive benefit for us on NDMP or any increased CIFS support.

Version 10 will bring backup support for SMB and NFS Shares (NAS backup). Cannot make any comments regarding NDMP at the moment, though.

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
Just to add my 2ct, NDMP has different use cases. It can be
- using a (NetApp)-filer as a kind of "tape server" - backup software uses tape drives (and maybe even libraries?) connected to the filer as target for external data;
- backing up data from a filer to filer-attached Tape drives - backup software only as control instance, backup server is not in the data path.
- backing up data from a filer to backup server attached tape library and drives (aka. 3-way-NDMP).
One main goodie for NDMP backup is that file system meta data will be backed up so it can be restored as it was. With CIFS or NFS there always seems to be some kind of meta data loss during transit.
Depending on how well NDMP is implemented on the filer and on the side of the backup software, it might even have something similar to "CBT" to enable "forever incremental" in a timely fashion - I don't know how you'll achieve that with direct backup of CIFS or NFS share.
I'm seeing people moving away from NDMP backups because the amount of data stored in a filer (we have a 'small' Isilon cluster with about 150TB and billions of files) makes it unfeasible. We can't possibly meet any sensible RPO or even RTO, because incremental backups take up a lot of time for treewalks (which files have changed), and even though full backup are actually faster, you can only write about 130Mb/s to one LTO5 drive, so it almost always takes too long for a backup to finish.
To paraphrase a famous quote: "NDMP is the worst form of backup, except for all others that have been tried". It would be great to have Veeam support NDMP, because from my experience Veeam works great, which could mean that Veeam's implementation of NDMP also might be great...

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
just q quick note: we are using vmware App Volume Manager, and this products writes vmdk files on a vmware datastore, but this vmdk files are NOT a virtual machine you can see in vcenter.
So we are not able to backup that in the moment, So this feauture request gets much more important!!

+1 for NDMP on Netapp.
I'm wondering why it's been 4 years since this thread has been created and they still have not bothered to implement it. Lot's of people have asked for it, do they not listen to their customers?
I would also like to know when they plan to do it and hope it will be available to all VBR Editions.

I am losing deals because Veeam does not check the NDMP box. Specifically ISILON. I know there are issues and NDMP is the "NDMP is the worst form of backup, except for all others that have been tried". It would be great to have Veeam support NDMP.

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
Hello folks.
Thank you for your posts. For now, I can say that we are researching the possibility to support NDMP protocol as a part of Veeam B&R tape feature. Please do not forget to share the model of device you are willing to protect via NDMP. Also, the latest supported NDMP protocol version might come handy, so, if possible, please include it in your post too.

Re: Feature request: NetApp NDMP support
We use multiple NetApp Filers (FAS8040 & A200 models) that we would like to back up with VEEAM to a Data Domain backup appliance using NDMP. The data contained on the NetApp Filers is a combination of FC LUNs, NFS, and CIFS shares. Both models are support NDMP v4.
Not having this feature jeopardizes backup of critical data, to the point that we are considering replacing VEEAM with an alternative that supports NDMP and/or AIX. While support for both would be optimal, we could make due with just NDMP support.
Thanks,
Bill
