Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Hi,
after installing U4, it sometimes happens that the splashscreen is the topmost window during startup of the console. Since it takes quite some time to start the Veeam Console this is a bit annoying, since the splash screen covers other applications and windows.
Weird thing is that this doesn't always happen. Sometimes the splashscreen can be send to the background by other applications, but most of the time it on top of all other applications.
Franc.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Hi Franc, if it is the topmost for the entire system, not just for the console application, and cannot be sent background, then this looks unexpected to me. Let me check if we've seen similar behavior internally.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Hi,
it's indeed topmost for the entire system. It looks like its reproducible by switching to other applications during startup of the console and then go back to the console. The splashscreen comes to the front and stays there.
btw, why does it take quite some time to launch the console? In our case it takes around 35 seconds before the console is shown, this is across our 1Gb LAN. Even locally on the Veeam server itself, it takes 35 secs.

Yep, please do, since it is a bit too long. And two issues might be related actually.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
If you get any resolution to this, I'd like to know. Console takes 30+ seconds now now matter what. Feels like there's a 30 second timeout going on.
You can disable the splash screen hklm\software\veeam\veeam backup and replication
dword
ShowSplashScreen=0
But then, of course, there is just an awkward 30+ second nothing until the console actually loads.

Looks very much like some certificate validation issue, with the console giving up after 30 sec.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Hi,
Support also thought this and asked me to do this:
----
I can confirm it's update 4 specific known issue and this should be fixed in the next update.
For now, there are only two workarounds to deal with this issue:
1) Move the following file on Veeam server: C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup\Veeam.Backup.PublicStoragePlugin.Ibm.dll to some other location or rename it;
Please make sure to keep this file - it is needed to ensure, that the change won't affect any jobs. If you will see any malfunction, please just return this file.
2) If the first way is not applicable, you can try to reduce timeouts on Network Retrieval tab in local policies: Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Public Key Policies/Certificate Path Validation Settings. Restart of Veeam Installer Service is required after that.
----
Unfortunately both workarounds didn't work in our case (I've set the validation timeout to 1 second). Support is investigating further.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Short update: support is still working on the case. They have multiple reports about the slow startup. The console.log of Veeam reports this:
There's seems to be a delay in loading the plugin dll's. They don't know why yet. It's not a certificate check validation issue.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Hi,
Today I got an hotfix that resolves the slow startup. The issue was with resolving the host name of the veeam server when it has multiple IP addresses. After installing the hotfix and applying the neccessary regkey, startup time of the console went down from 35 to 15 seconds.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Is this a publicly available hotfix, or do I need to open a support ticket for this? This server does have multiple IP addresses, runs 9.5 U4a, and the splash screen may display for up to 45 seconds or so before the UI loads. It is not a real big deal, but if it can be resolved, that would be beneficial.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Yes, all hotfixes can only be obtained via our support team. Just reference this thread to speed up the troubleshooting process.

Unfortunately after installing update 4b the slow start issue of the console is back again. I re-opened the case.

This could happen if the hotfix was not included to this update, so, yes, re-opening a support ticket is sometimes needed.

Re: Splash Screen
Hello Anton,
Do you mean the splash screen that appears while the application is launching? How long does it last in your case?
Thanks

Re: Splash Screen
If his issue is that same as the one I have been having (on 4a, will be updating to 4b in about an hour when my copy jobs finish):
Once you log in, the splash screen comes up on top of all other windows and if you tab to other applications it will still be in front until it goes away (which can take a couple of minutes). The only way I have found to get it to go to the background while I work in other applications/windows is to click on the splash screen itself, and then move to the other applications.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
I opened a case about this, #03680393, it is 'by design' and have to open a feature request for this...
Advice for now is to set a registry key to hide the splash screen entirely:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
Name: ShowSplashScreen
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0 (disabled)
To apply the key restart Veeam Backup service.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
Yes, but then it minimizes all of my windows as well.
As soon as I click on a different application window after the minimize the splash screen comes up instantly but it is then pushed behind whatever window I pulled up.
I will report the behavior of 9.5u4b in an hour or so when my update is finished.

Try the ShowSplashScreen (DWORD) registry value, should be set to "0" to disable splash.

Re: Splashscreen sometimes topmost window
I found it here (old post, but registry value seems to work):
Splash Screen - Veeam Community Forums
veeam-backup-replication-f2/splash-screen-t18197.html
The key should be placed in:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication
Type = DWORD
Name = ShowSplashScreen
Value = 0 (to disable splashscreen)
Works with Veeam 9.5 update 4b
Note that VBR GUI startup will not be visible for few seconds.

Our server had multiple ips configured , and the console took 2 minutes to open
after i added all the ip adresses to the local host file with the FQDN the problem was fixed and the console opened in 20 -30 seconds
